Gotan Project - La Revancha Del Tango (2001)

Tango is crying out for reinvention. The death of Astor Piazzolla in 1992 marked the end of the last great era of experimentation. Perennial revivals and occasional new approaches pop up in Buenos Aires but there is still a creative void in the genre.

"La Revancha del Tango" by Franco-Argentine outfit Gotan Project takes tango away from the ballroom, the floorshow and the heavy nostalgia that lingers in every step of the dance. Acoustic guitar, piano, double bass and bandoneón (the plaintive button accordion vital to tango) are overlaid with dub treatments, screeching violins, fast trancey beats and speech samples. They are clearly on a mission to get tango into clubland.

Their use of tango comes from the classic thumping, dance-friendly orchestral sound of the 1930s and 40s. The repetitions, sudden shifts in direction and melodramatic flourishes fit neatly into the frantic pace of the contemporary dance beat. But this is music for the lounge, not the salon. Most numbers open with promising stridency but this can soon drift into a level, blasé series of variations. And some will find it soporific. The liveliest track on the album, "Last Tango in Paris", is the leastgroundedin tango. The energetic chacarera "La del ruso"finds the ten musicians liveliest when doing jazz-style improvisations.

Their songs are given some smoky (not always tuneful) female vocals on "Una musica brutal" and the great Piazzolla-Solanas song "Vuelvo al sur". Some of the singing recalls the past glories of tango canción but is essentially decorative, evoking more than it delivers.

Which is, I suspect, the project Gotan have embarked on to explore, and exploit, tango's suggestive qualities, its melancholy moods and romance, and its local mythologies. Their music hints at shadowy cobbled backstreets in Buenos Aires, the elegant couples dancing while democracies are toppled and the memory of tango as its one great export. Like a soundtrack, you keep wondering what the film might look like.

Those looking for a new tango maestro must keep on waiting. Whilst this album is daring on its own terms, and achingly stylish, it will not have tango conservatives threatening the lives of Gotan's musicians as they did Piazzolla.

This is a trippy, slickly-executed and utterly modern tango sound, but a bit too harmless and non-committal. Where the band go next with tango, or dance,or jazz,is an open question but they'll probably go somewhere interesting. (bbc.co.uk)

Coldcut - Sound Mirrors (2006)

What's a duo to do after pioneering cut 'n paste remixes, independent record label direction, VJ-software design, and political art activity? For the progressive production/DJ group Coldcut, writing and recording another album seems an underwhelming and almost regressive response. Nevertheless, Jonathan More and Matt Black re-enter the "traditional" recording arena nearly seven years after their last full-length release with Sound Mirrors. A characteristic journey through popular music's myriad conceptions of the beat, the album is a sensible addition to the group's far-reaching oeuvre. However, in the past the group's trademark collage aesthetic meant songs that refused to sit still within any one genre, preferring to suck in sounds like a Sarlac sandpit monster. Now, with the mainstreaming of the term "mash-up," the group's work seems to fall into neat categories. Sound Mirrors remains true to the group's kitchen sink approach, although individual pieces often sound too familiar.

Considerable fault can be traced to the record's collaborative approach. Now more than ever, there is a need for continuity of contributions in order to make a sensible whole. Lead single "Everything is Under Control" punches and explodes with perfect power, but perhaps better belongs on the Blues Explosion's last record Damage as Jon Spencer’s punctuations, guitar abominations, and a Chuck D-channeling Mike Ladd battle for b-side supremacy. Similarly, "Walk a Mile" looks back to the Wild Bunch days to hook peer Robert Owens with that ol' drum programming/mourning orchestra combo, while "Whistle and a Prayer" finds great parallels between the loopy melancholy of Fog and Coldcut's curious beat-skipping. While each artist (or combination of artists) sound at home on their respective tracks, the continuity of the album suffers for it. SM sounds less like a Coldcut effort than a series of Coldcut productions for other folks' records.

That said, the production quality remains fantastic. Roots Manuva checks in to toast over the raga dancehall infusion "True Skool," gelling jump-up chants seamlessly with one of Coldcut's most certifiable pop-party confections; if Roots Manuva had such bass supremacy each time out, he would certainly have a larger name stateside. Better still is the group's steadfast commitment to chaos, which receives a choice makeover at select moments. Album closer "Colours the Soul" seamlessly blends live acoustic bass performance, super fuzzy vocals from Dom Spitzer, and synthetic orchestral arrangement, conjuring both images of epic nature scenes in IMAX and intimate recording sessions on an infinite beach. Similarly, the title cut creaks with age and speaks with youth, an Indiana Jones adventure for a DJ's Holy Grail. Unfortunately, the group also revisits forgettable sounds on occasion, such as on "Just for the Kick" which features clichéd techno-synth stutters over a skinned two-step track. For the most part though, Coldcut maintains their ability to conjure multiple planes, times, and record collections at any given moment, sending the listener through wormholes of music.

However, this discussion must return to the group's standards. With an increasingly expansive vision and noteworthy reputation outside of the myopic music industry, a traditional album seems a quaint idea for Coldcut. While SMtriumphs in terms of technical merits and listening ease, it does little to further the group's reputation or to expand the depth of their recorded work. In fact, its lack of focus often mutes its attempts to strike hard. For example, while the presence of Saul Williams and Amiri Baraka is notable independently, they are wallpaper here on SM. In other words, Coldcut does little to push their voice or the voices of their collaborators.

Perhaps this is a necessary step. With an expanding choice of approaches, a return to basics seems natural; More and Black are musicians, first and foremost. And should the group choose to focus on recorded works again, consider the record a pre-season warm-up. On the other hand, should Coldcut choose another path, consider the record a reminder of a retiree's potency. stylusmagazine.

Muggs - Dust (2003)

DJ Muggs - the musical brains behind hip-hop act Cypress Hill - has really spread his wings with this, his third solo release. Quite unlike any of his work with Hill, the album is closer in spirit to the eclecticism of Bristolian trip-hoppers Massive Attack, Portishead and Tricky (Muggs produced the latter’s 1999 Juxtapose album). The influence of these acts make Dust a dark labyrinth of hip-hop, soul, rock and reggae, which might lead one to believe that this would be an uneven affair. Fortunately, Muggs has enough skill and innovation (plus a well-chosen array of guest vocalists) to update this over-used formula into something fresh.

While elements of rock and rap remain, this is quite unlike the fusion embraced by Cypress Hill on their last outing, Skull and Bones. The "rock" here is of a rather more tasteful variety: closer to moody psychedelia than Limp Bizkit-crunch.

Opener "I Know" is an underwhelming slice of Massive-style paranoia and gloom, but the highlights come thick and fast after this. "Rain" and "Faded" (both featuring vocals from Buckcherry’s Josh Todd) are ideal summer listening: sunny, lazy psychedelic rock. Additionally, "Morta" and closing track "Far Away" fuse murky rhythms with lush string arrangements and breathy female vocals (courtesy of Amy Trujillo) to gorgeous effect: the kind of thing Tricky got bored with far too early in his once-promising career. "Fat City", the collaboration with Greg Dulli (singer with soul-rockers The Afghan Whigs) is another highlight: a playful slice of hip-hop/soul, with an infectious piano motif providing the hook.

The sense of adventure rarely lets up, partly due to the series of electronic oddities that punctuate the proceedings. "Niente" is the best of these: a pretty electronic instrumental, complete with affecting Boards of Canada-style children’s voices in the background. "Chasing Shadows" is a short snippet of sharp rhythms and haunting strings, while "Cloudy Days" submerges a pretty Spanish-guitar melody in electronic whirrs and static.

Things are let down slightly by a few by-the-numbers trip-hop tracks. The aforementioned “I Know” is luckily only joined by “Gone for Good,” in this manner. Even Everlast’s pleasing growl can’t rescue the latter song, but it points towards the fact that nearly none of the tracks have nothing good to be said for them.

Several of the trip-hop originals are currently stuck in a creative cul-de-sac, unable to bring their once-remarkable sound into interesting new places. For instance, Massive Attack are content to make go-nowhere dinner party music, while Tricky is struggling to lift his music out of the pit of ugliness he dragged it into with his 1998 album Angels With Dirty Faces. Thankfully, Muggs has succeeded where they have failed: Dust is an accomplished triumph. Trip-hop has been brought into the 21st century, at last. stylusmagazine

Uzul prod - Travelling Without Moving (2007) FLAC

UNKLE – Psyence Fiction (1998)

Experimental hip-hop outfit UNKLE were one of the original artists releasing material through noted U.K. label Mo' Wax, which helped launch the instrumental mid-'90s downtempo breakbeat revival eventually termed trip-hop. Though hardly the label's highest-profile group (at least until the long-delayed release of their debut LP in 1998), UNKLE's members included label head James Lavelle, who formed Mo' Wax while still in his teens as an antidote to the increasingly stale acid jazz/Northern soul scene. Stripping the music down to its barest of essentials -- bass, percussion, minimal samples, and heavy effects -- the Mo' Wax sound (best exemplified by the second Mo' Wax label comp, Headz, as well as its sequel, the two-part Headz II) quickly gained respectability and a large audience. Although not as prolific as other Mo' Wax artists such as DJs Shadowand Krush, UNKLE nonetheless played a crucial role in cementing Mo' Wax's early sound though their Time Has Come double EP, the latter of which featured remixes of the title track by Plaid, Portishead, and U2 producer Howie B.

The UNKLE trio was comprised of Lavelle, Tim Goldsworthy (a mate of Lavelle's since childhood), and producer Kudo, of seminal Japanese label Major Force (and a member of the on-again, off-again psychedelic beat crew Skylab). Previous to his entry into production, Lavelle, along with Goldsworthy, was deep into New York hip-hop and electro, the emerging late-'80s Sheffield bleep scene, the English acid jazz scene (which he covered as a columnist for Straight No Chaser magazine), and of course the acid house and techno explosions that were redefining the English counterculture at the time. The pair hooked up with third member Kudo through the growing rep of the latter's Love T.K.O. project, whose outbound interpretations of breakbeat and acid jazz drew Lavelle's ear. WhileGoldsworthy and Kudo remained more heavily involved in nuts 'n' bolts production (especially given the success of Mo' Wax, with the penning of an expansive partial ownership deal with A&M Records in 1996), Lavelle was heavily involved in the conceptual and organizational end, crafting beats and laying out vague sketches his partners then expanded into full-blown tracks.

Despite the scarcity of released material, UNKLE grew to wider acclaim during 1996 through remix projects for Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Tortoise. After Goldsworthy and Kudo were effectively replaced by Mo' Wax bill-payer DJ Shadow, the all-star LP Psyence Fiction finally appeared in 1998. It was a disappointment considering the advance hype, and DJ Shadow distanced himself from the collective. Lavelle, amid much work as a DJ, recruited singer/songwriter Richard File for the second UNKLE full-length, 2003's Never, Never, Land. Four years later, Lavelle and Filereturned with War Stories, including both collaborators from the past (Josh Homme) and new associates (Ian Astbury, Chris Goss) to contribute to the heaviest-sounding UNKLE release to date. A pair of odds 'n' ends collections, More Stories and End Titles...Stories for Film (both released in 2008), featured old and new material, including music from UNKLE's soundtrack to the documentary Odyssey in Rome. In 2009 the “Heavy Drug” single announced the coming of their 2010 album Where Did the Night Fall. (AllMusic)
