Bomb The Bass is the group name for Tim Simenon's innovative dance collective who burst on to the developing underground, acid-house scene in the late 1980s under the auspices of pioneering label Rhythm King.

Simenon, born in london in 1968, was a DJ at the legendary Wag club when he decided to attend a studio engineering course. With a bag full of records to sample from his studio trickery allied to the growth of homemade dance records he put together his first record Beat Dis wich reached number 2 in the UKin february 1988.

With it's innovative and starting use of samples, from Thunderbirds to the hi-fi demonstrtation LP "Journey Into Stereophonic Sound" it was hugely influential on the UK dance scene and a pop world looking for inspiration.

Meanwhile Simenon helped to pioneer the DJ-as-artist trend, pre dating Norman Cook and giving namechecks, within the records, to such luminaries of the wheels of steel as westwood and Mark Moore (Of S-Express Fame)

The debut album from Bomb The Bass was Into The Dragon released in october 1988 wich produced two further top 10 hits in the same year - Megablast / Don't Make Me Wait and Say A Little Player featuring the vocals of Maureen Walsh.

Simenon continued to produce several massive hits and groundbreaking tracks, for other artists, Neneh Cherry "Buffalo Stance", Adamski "Killer" and Seal's "Crazy". Not gaining enough credit for these collaborations he return to Bomb The Bass with another top 10 hit "Winter In July", in 1991 taken from the second album, "Unkown Territory". The Album marked a change of direction more trip hop than techno.

Around this time he was forced to change the group's name, temporarily, falling foul of sensitive types during the Gulf war!

Tim Simenon continues to produce other acts, working with Bjork and Naomi Campbell, among others, while Bomb The Bass activities are on hold!

Bomb The Bass & Lali Puna - Clearcut (2001)

Morr Music return with this inspired collaboration : Tim Simenon's long-dormant Bomb The Bass, together with the much loved, inspirational Lali Puna. Ever since the release of their Tricoder LP late in 1999, Lali Puna have managed to grab the attention of both the electronic and pop communities - being championed by the likes of Andrew Weatherall and many a style magazine all at the same time. Having picked up on this - Tim Simenon invited markus acher and portugese chanteuse valerie trebeljah and friends to collaborate on a track that he had just began working on. The result? Well, make no mistake, this is the most accessable slice of addictive breakbeat pop you will hear all year. Dubbed out chords set the foundation before a skittering break jumps in and envelopes Valerie's honey-dewed vocal. The interlude appears with a kind of effervescent shoe-gazing catharsis, with Valerie's multi-layered voice evoking deep, glazed sunshine...before jumping back into beat. But hold on a sec...this is only half the story. If this collaboration seems an odd one to you, how about this....remixes come courtesy of - Herrmann and Kleine, Opiate, Arovane and Christian Kleine. Herrmann and Kleine offer up a masterclass in breakbeat chop-up..sparse breaks moulded into something a lot darker before delicate melodies inch their way to the fore. Opiate graces the track with his signature lush sound...if you liked what he did for Piano Magic on the stunning 'Panic Amigo' EP - this will have you hunched over your cocktail in pure joy. Arovane offers up what can only be described as his best work since the 'Tides' LP...pure, gorgeous, poppy loveliness that melts the breaks away and creates a kind of alternate late night version. Finally, the ever dependable Christian Kleine infuses the original with two measures of hip hop and obliterates the rest with the lush looped vocal refrain and teardrop melodies. Awesome. Though Simenon's breakout hit "Beat Dis" isn't quite as frenetic as contemporary material byColdcut (or even M/A/R/R/S), the debut Bomb the Bass LP is an intriguing trip through sampledelic hip-hop, electro, acid-house, and even dance-pop (as on his other hits, "Don't Make Me Wait" and the Burt Bacharach cover "Say a Little Prayer"). Much of the album mines territory similar to "Beat Dis" -- that is, inventive hip-hop tracks like "On the Cut," "Megablast (Hip Hop on Precinct 13)," and "Dynamite Beats" which are somewhat indebted to Mantronix.
