Scuba - A Mutual Antipathy (2008)

Judging from Scuba's debut album, his relocation to Berlin has been an important one. No, he hasn’t started making minimal, but the textures of Berlin, and by extension, the influence of Detroit, are all over these songs. A Mutual Antipathy is a stunningly successful combination of London dubstep beats and subs with the floating textures of early ‘90s and contemporary techno, all pitched just right for home listening.

That is the key to this album—it knows that the home isn't the club, yet it sacrifices little of what makes dubstep such potent club music. Right from opener ‘Systematic Decline,’ this album bounces on a bed of sub-bass, though mostly this takes a backseat to the melodic elements of the tracks. Which is perfect, because the majority of us don't have Funktion 1 soundsystems in our bedrooms.

The second track ‘Hard Boiled’ really sets the tone. Wonky drums and howling synths usher in a Basic Channel-esque main line, offset with flourishes of Selected Ambient Works-style pads. ‘Disorder’ picks up a repeated, filtered synth lead, which, along with the 4/4 pulse is very reminiscent of the wetter side of German techno.

Another influence can be heard in the industrial nature of the drums—they’re often heavy or even crushing. Yet, such as on ‘Ruptured’, they are offset by synth parts of such a delicate nature that they don't ever overwhelm the home listener. Also adding to the cohesive nature of the album is the fact that the tracks run together. It’s not mixed as such, but when the synth line of ‘The Upside’ pokes up out of the static of ‘Ruptured,’ it helps to make it one of the most memorable on the album.

A Mutual Antipathy has got subs, huge drum patterns, dry synths worthy of minimal's finest sound designers and emotional crescendos enough to perhaps even satisfy a trance lover. If I had one criticism of this album, it'd be that it is slightly uniform in rhythm and mood. The uniformity helps, however, to make this such a cohesive collection.

For a relatively small genre, dubstep has been unusually fruitful in the album department. A Mutual Antipathy is in no way going to change that trend.(RA REVIEWS)

0016.    What Is New Urban Jazz

NewUrbanJazz.com isn't just a clever album title, it's a web address and marketing tool where keyboardist Bob Baldwin streams jazz online for listeners looking for their contemporary jazz fix. Baldwin's site joins other Internet sites and satellite radio as replacements for terrestrial radio stations in San Francisco, Chicago, Miami, Philadelphia and other cities that have abandoned the smooth jazz format.

As the smooth jazz format seems to be reliant on 20-year-old Sade songs and waiting for the next Kenny G. to come along and revive the flagging format, Baldwin is thinking ahead and looking back to the days when radio was the source for something more adventuresome. More jazz fans are embracing the internet as the medium to bypass radio conglomerates and their timid, tepid programming.

NewUrbanJazz.com is like a Valentine's Day card from Baldwin to the radio days of the late '70s and early '80s. Baldwin fondly looks back at a time when musical genres weren't so stratified, and New York disc jockeys and night clubs set trends instead of following them.

Over 70 minutes in length, Baldwin alternates between bouncy beats ("Jeep Jazz," "She's All That" "It Is What It Is," "Third Wind"), old school soul ("Somebody Else's Guy," "Too Late," "Natural Thing") and neo-hip-hop ("Seems Like One of Those Daze," "Don't Keep Me Waiting").

Hip-hop and jazz sometimes make for uneasy bedfellows, and the album might have benefited from more of the latter and less of the former. Baldwin might have considered a "less is more" approach, as the album does drag a bit toward the end. This might be in part because the younger vocalists/rappers are not yet as accomplished as the old school guest soloists, which include Jocelyn Brown, Phil Perry, and Freddie Jackson.

Baldwin gets major mileage from a trio of guest saxophonists—(Najee, Marion Meadows and Joey Sommerville)—and a full horn section on the tribute, "Joe Zawinul." This production was clearly a labor of love, and Baldwin's own playing on keyboards, piano and other instruments is strong and passionate throughout.

NewUrbanJazz.com is virtually a throwback to rock n' roll concept albums like Pink Floyd's The Wall (Columbia, 1979). The theme here isn't one of alienated youth and jaded rock stars, it's kicking back as a long hot day comes to an end, with the prospect of a chilled-out night full of cool grooves and good times.

Fans of the smooth jazz radio format are waking up to find their favorite stations flipping formats to talk and classic rock like pancakes at IHOP. Going even softer than smooth jazz with the chill format is merely delaying the inevitable end. NewUrbanJazz.com may or may not be The Next Big Thing, but at least Baldwin's approach is proactive, not reactive.

Gotan Project - La Revancha Del Tango (2001)

Tango is crying out for reinvention. The death of Astor Piazzolla in 1992 marked the end of the last great era of experimentation. Perennial revivals and occasional new approaches pop up in Buenos Aires but there is still a creative void in the genre.

"La Revancha del Tango" by Franco-Argentine outfit Gotan Project takes tango away from the ballroom, the floorshow and the heavy nostalgia that lingers in every step of the dance. Acoustic guitar, piano, double bass and bandoneón (the plaintive button accordion vital to tango) are overlaid with dub treatments, screeching violins, fast trancey beats and speech samples. They are clearly on a mission to get tango into clubland.

Their use of tango comes from the classic thumping, dance-friendly orchestral sound of the 1930s and 40s. The repetitions, sudden shifts in direction and melodramatic flourishes fit neatly into the frantic pace of the contemporary dance beat. But this is music for the lounge, not the salon. Most numbers open with promising stridency but this can soon drift into a level, blasé series of variations. And some will find it soporific. The liveliest track on the album, "Last Tango in Paris", is the leastgroundedin tango. The energetic chacarera "La del ruso"finds the ten musicians liveliest when doing jazz-style improvisations.

Their songs are given some smoky (not always tuneful) female vocals on "Una musica brutal" and the great Piazzolla-Solanas song "Vuelvo al sur". Some of the singing recalls the past glories of tango canción but is essentially decorative, evoking more than it delivers.

Which is, I suspect, the project Gotan have embarked on to explore, and exploit, tango's suggestive qualities, its melancholy moods and romance, and its local mythologies. Their music hints at shadowy cobbled backstreets in Buenos Aires, the elegant couples dancing while democracies are toppled and the memory of tango as its one great export. Like a soundtrack, you keep wondering what the film might look like.

Those looking for a new tango maestro must keep on waiting. Whilst this album is daring on its own terms, and achingly stylish, it will not have tango conservatives threatening the lives of Gotan's musicians as they did Piazzolla.

This is a trippy, slickly-executed and utterly modern tango sound, but a bit too harmless and non-committal. Where the band go next with tango, or dance,or jazz,is an open question but they'll probably go somewhere interesting. (bbc.co.uk)
